Brain Health Matters

The following free brain health activities are available this quarter. Our Brain Health Matters programming is made possible by a grant from the Norcliffe Foundation and sponsorship support from Northgate Plaza, a Merrill Gardens Community and Merrill Gardens at Northgate.

Boost Your Brain Health

Join Dr. Jane BG Tornatore as you learn simple techniques you can use in your daily life to help maintain the health of your brain. Learn easy, everyday tips to boost your mental vitality. Find the answers to questions about when memory changes are normal and when they are not. Cost: Free, Wed, Oct 6, 1-2pm. Call (206) 297-0875 to register.

InSight: Focus better & Notice more

Would you like to: Drive more safely and confidently? Improve your ability to concentrate? Retain your health-related quality of life and independence? Your ability to see depends as much on your brain as your eyes. The eyes take in visual information, but it’s the brain’s job to process it. If your brain gets “fuzzy” as often happens with age, your ability diminishes to take in, react to and remember what you see. Insight is an entertaining brain fitness program available at the GSC that does for your brain what glasses do for the eyes. It sharpens perception and speeds up your ability to react. For a free demo of this beneficial program, call Liz at (206) 297-0875.

You & Wii

Have you been hearing about the Nintendo Wii and wanting to give it a try? What makes the Wii a unique video game is the handheld controllers that allow you to move as if you were actually performing the activity displayed on screen (think bowling, tennis, or golfing.)  Sign up today by calling (206) 297-0875.

POSIT Demos - new reduced fee: now only $50!

The GSC is very excited to be one of the first senior centers in the country to have the POSIT Science Brain Fitness Program available for the community. This revolutionary program features a variety of simple auditory-based computerized exercises designed to improve cognitive function. Want to check out this new brain health program in the computer lab and see if it’s right for you? Call the GSC and ask for Liz - she’ll set up an appointment for you to come and meet with one of the coaches and see if this program meets your needs (Call (206) 297-0875 and set up an appointment with Liz. The demo is free; there is a fee if you decide to participate in the program.)

Cultural Engagement

Join us as we explore a variety of cultures through discussion, presentations, movies, books, and food. Every month will focus on a different culture, beginning with a special lunch at noon on the first Friday of the month. Cost is $3/members, $5/non-members for lunch. Every subsequent Friday at 11am, gather for a free, informational session on the history and heritage of that culture.

For more information, call Marianne at (206) 297-0875. Donations are gladly accepted to help further promote cultural engagement and appreciation of the beauty and reality of diversity.
